Kenner told people she was sixteen when she arrived, but no one who dealt with her believed that was reliable. She also said she was a New Year’s baby because she had heard New Year’s babies were special. The truth is that she does not know exactly how old she is or when she was born.
Annie Roxas entered her into the system as Kenner Roxas, born January 1, 2423, birthplace Arrow Rock, parents unknown, adopted parents Dave and Annie Roxas. Matt may bluster later about someone needing to sponsor Kenner, but Annie has always intended to do it.

Kenner arrived in Arrow Rock roughly thirty-five pounds lighter than she is now. Before prolonged starvation and expulsion from the commune, she had been much heavier, around 165 pounds, soft and fed enough to be considered plump. By the time she was thrown out, she had been starved down to roughly 135 pounds, then lost about another thirty pounds trying to survive on what she could kill or forage between Fergus Falls and the ruins south of Des Moines.
Her current body weight is a sign of recovery. Good food, steady work, community, training, and safety have restored her to a healthy, capable frame.
Origin and Hidden Past
Kenner came from a religious commune, likely in Minnesota. Matt inferred this from small things she dropped over time, but he does not know the full truth.
Her father was a pastor. She was beaten and starved for refusing to marry the men he said she would marry. When she refused him three times, they finally forced her out. She walked out stripped naked on an icy February morning.
One of the torments used against her was the destruction of an ancient Care Bear she had played with. They burned it and told her she had to give up toys because she was about to become an elder’s toy. When someone later asked her name, the first name she could think of was the ancient brand name on the toy’s tag: Kenner.
She almost never tells anyone this. The reader may know it. R’pep may eventually learn some or all of it, but only after earning that silence. The town knows her present far better than her past, and that is the point.
Arrival in Arrow Rock
Kenner wandered into the Freehold a little more than a year before V’ren arrival.
What is known:
She flagged down one of Matt’s haulers heading home from Ames, just south of the ruins of Des Moines. The couple who found her brought her back to Columbia, then passed her on to an office worker headed toward Marshall, who dropped her at the Arrow Rock library.
At the library, Jennifer Holden got only two useful answers from her:
Her name was Kenner.
She had come to Arrow Rock because she had heard it was a place where someone could arrive with no past and build a future.
Jennifer handed her off to Fire Chief Larry’s oldest wife, Candace, known as Candy. Candy sent Kenner to shower, fed her, trimmed her hair, and gave her clean clothes before sending her to Pam.
Pam put Kenner in one of the upper-story apartments above the Lumad Trading Company.
Housing and Home
Kenner lives above the Lumad Trading Company, a local cooperative run by the Lumad Society of Saline County. The shop stocks hard-to-find Filipino ingredients, consignment traditional items, general Filipino novelty goods made by members, and has a barako coffee bar where Filipino politics and local gossip are debated.
Her apartment is one of the one-bedroom units, built or last converted around 1910. It was once part of the Carver and Boone Law Office.
Her bedroom was once a lawyer’s office. It has carved oak panels to waist height, tall frosted rondel glass panels, chain-pull transoms, and original ceiling fans with modern motors. From the central staircase, her apartment still shows the original oak and glass office frontage and brass signage identifying the Carver and Boone Law Office.
She moved in the original conference table she found in storage and uses it for her 88-inch television and entertainment system. Her kitchenette sits behind the couch and looks out onto Main Street through large windows. Her bathroom is tiny, with an old clawfoot tub and shower, a tiny pedestal sink, and barely enough space for the toilet, with a bowl-top sink in the Japanese style.
The second large apartment in her building is not for rent. Kenner has been using it for book storage and as a reading room. It has a mission-style chair in Matt’s preferred style, a tall bronze and stained-glass lamp she restored after Rayya taught her the work, and a companion piece in the corner beside the original Boone partners desk. It has a nicer bathing area, though far less private: a jacuzzi tub in the corner, with the toilet and sink hidden behind a beaded curtain.
Her home is not flashy. It is old, strange, useful, quiet, and increasingly hers.
Work and Local Role Before V’ren Arrival
Kenner’s first paid role was organizing the six apartments above the Lumad Trading Company. She was paid the local minimum by the building owner, Matt.
She later took odd jobs for Pam and found herself at Matt’s house often. Angelina and Dixie used her for a few months as an errand girl, but stopped because she was too comfortable in that low-status utility role. They wanted her around more people, not hiding behind quiet usefulness.
They helped arrange a job for her at The Beer Slinger, a bar with good pay, local minimum plus tips, because Matt financed it. The Beer Slinger is known for a fantastic tenderloin sandwich and hand-dipped onion rings. Matt is a regular, often in once or twice a week for lunch or dinner. It is also a midafternoon meeting place for Matt and farm bosses, wardens, or trusted locals.
Because of that work, Kenner is familiar with Matt, Angelina, Floyd, Pam, Dixie, Dave, Annie, Rayya, and other working figures in Matt’s orbit.
She still shows up in Matt’s kitchen from time to time to talk with the office ladies, including Pam, Dixie, and Angelina, who treat the kitchen as the premier break room.

Most people do not know how special that car is. It has the black trim stripped out and replaced with a white trim package, including white leather seats and white powder-coated rims. Porsche made fifty of those because Marmaduke Logistics bought them all for worldwide managers.
Matt almost gave the car to her outright and may have tilted the auction in her favor. What he loves is that Kenner noticed how much cooler the white trim package was. She saw it. She wanted it. She bid.
That matters to Matt. Kenner is not flashy, but she is not dead inside. She recognizes quality and chooses beauty when something speaks to her.
Main Street Apartment Knowledge
Kenner knows the Main Street upper-story apartments better than almost anyone.
There are twenty-four buildings, six per block, facing each other for two blocks. Each building has alley access and old but maintained infrastructure.
Apartment stock:
48 two-bedroom units. About forty are used for storage and need to be emptied. Two full buildings are occupied by Larry’s children, spouses, and young children.
48 one-bedroom units. Thirty-eight are available. Many occupied units are rented by Larry’s adult children who are part of the fire crew, often with spouses but no children.
32 studios. All are used for storage and are easiest to clean out because Kenner cataloged them.
Kenner has not organized all of them, but she has been in all of them. She knows what is in them, where the problems are, which spaces can be cleared fastest, and what needs airing out.
The buildings are old and cold in winter, but not unsafe. No Freeholder would allow plumbing or electrical systems to fail. The radiator systems work and are on modern electric boilers, with solar water heaters on the roofs. That keeps pipes from freezing, though it does not make them comfortable in deep winter.
Day 1 V’ren Crisis Role
Kenner’s first major V’ren-crisis side-story role is clearing Main Street apartments for emergency housing.
She gets a mixed crew of humans and V’ren, carts things out, opens windows, turns on fans, and sets room-sized air filters running. She uses Matt’s local storefront and warehouse system to get fans, filters, gloves, masks, labels, carts, and supplies dispatched.
By midafternoon, everyone is hot, dry, and dusty. Larry’s son Alex misuses one of the trucks to hose everyone off, including himself, since he was part of her crew.
This is Kenner’s first major proof that she is not just useful, but operationally important. She knows the town’s hidden capacity.
Marmaduke Mercantile and Supply Access
Kenner can get supplies quickly because Matt’s rural storefront system exists for exactly that kind of local response. The Marmaduke Mercantile Exchange is a rural storefront model tied to warehouse dispatch. It is not a big-box store and not a Dollar General extraction model. It keeps local towns supplied and keeps money local.
Kenner can walk in, tell the shopkeeper she needs materials for one of Matt’s projects, and the shopkeeper can call back an hour later asking where to send them.
This lets Kenner act quickly without needing Matt to personally intervene.
R’pep Y’alu
Kenner eventually notices R’pep Y’alu, a highborn V’ren boy around her age.
R’pep is highborn, but not from a prominent or large house. His parents were part of Kalnareth’s original crew. He survived the attack because he was down the hall washing in the communal refresher when their cabin was opened to vacuum. His parents died. The rest of his house and relatives were lost on the two ships that turned to fight.
Kenner sees in him what she recognizes from herself: someone broken, displaced, stripped of name, household, and future.
This is not traditional romance. R’pep is ace, and Kenner does not trust relationships. Marriage, courtship, and men’s desire were weaponized against her. What she finds with him is safety.
He is good for cuddles. He can be on her couch without demanding access to her body. Eventually she may bring him to bed, but not for sex. The intimacy is rest, warmth, quiet, and trust.
One early domestic beat: his apartment has not been cleaned yet by dinner, so Kenner invites Lily, one of Larry’s grandchildren who works in Matt’s staff kitchen, and tells her to bring food because they are watching Star Wars with two of Kenner’s V’ren crew. Lily and J’ula W’ard decide after Jedi that they are not sleeping on the couch and take the bed. Kenner and R’pep fall asleep on the couch. Kenner wakes with his head in her lap and him tucking her hand under his chin. She lets herself have pleasant thoughts until she has to pee.
That is the emotional lane: safe, practical, crowded, unforced.
J’ula W’ard
J’ula W’ard is one of Kenner’s V’ren crew.
She is highborn. House W’ard is important, though J’ula and her parents do not have especially high standing. Her mother is a surgeon. Her father is the V’ren equivalent of an allergist. He is assigned to duty looking after injured V’ren housed at the school, but still has time to recommend and order V’ren allergy tabs for the apartment-clearing team. This makes him the cool dad of the cleaning crew.
J’ula had been in university studying mathematics. When her family was transferred to the colony ship, she trained as a neural-interface technician. Once the firehouse station is complete and she has a place to live, she will join that team.
J’ula’s presence supports the apartment-clearing arc and connects Kenner’s story to the neural-interface bottleneck.
Citizenship Arc
Kenner’s citizenship arc is quiet but powerful.
She was not eligible for sponsorship on Shrove Tuesday, March 6, 2440, because she had not yet been a resident for a year and a day. She became eligible March 10, 2440.
Traditional summer and fall sponsorship dates involve public pledging on Lammas and formal oaths on Michaelmas, though Matt has been doing additional enrollment days in recent years as more newcomers become eligible.
Matt thinks someone should sponsor her and believes he should not do it himself because it would create favoritism. But Annie has already made the decision. Kenner has been in the Roxas system from the beginning.
Her arc is not about proving she deserves rescue. That happened before the story begins. Her arc is about everyone else catching up to the truth that she already belongs.
