She remembers him particularly well.
Matt was not merely another student passing through her classes. He later completed substantial formal work in botany, but Martha knew him before he became the political and economic figure he is in 2440. That gives her a relationship to him almost nobody in the current first-contact orbit possesses: she remembers the student before the sovereign.
Martha’s professional identity has since moved well beyond ordinary academic botany. She is a working botanical biochemist with a commercially successful public business and a far more selective private clientele.
West River Botanicals
West River Botanicals operates from the Perche Creek Market in Southwest Springfield.
Its retail side is upscale rather than mass-market. Ordinary West River products tend to sell for roughly twice the price of comparable mainstream bath-and-body products.
That retail operation is Martha’s dependable commercial base.
The more exclusive side is custom formulation.
Martha takes special clients largely by introduction. A consultation alone runs around 3,000 fiat, and the clientele is composed of people who have both the money to afford her work and enough interest in botanical products to care about the distinctions she makes.
Her specialty work includes custom botanical preparations, soaps, scents, and related formulations rather than merely selling premium versions of standard retail products.

Martha has a multigenerational connection to Lola Rhea.

Her late husband, approximately twenty years older than Martha, was also one of Lola Rhea’s students and was the person who introduced Martha to the Freehold.
Lola retired roughly sixty-seven years before the current story period, so Martha’s connection to her sits inside a much older professional and community network rather than beginning through Matt.
Lola’s palmhouse greenhouse also gives Martha access to botanical material that is difficult or impossible for her to obtain elsewhere. Pandan is particularly important because Martha cannot readily source equivalent material through normal channels.
During the world tour, Martha is expected to bring Lola an order personally.
The two therefore have an ongoing practical relationship rather than Lola merely being an elderly figure from Martha’s past.
T’mari and Botanical Work
Martha and T’mari have an obvious area of overlap through plants, chemistry, scent, and formulation.
Lola-grown botanical material can be shared while Martha and T’mari work together.

Matt has been making that preference clear long enough that Martha does not require explanation.

Martha is already an accomplished scientist and practitioner. She is not seeking V’ren education because she lacks basic professional competence. The apprenticeship creates a direct professional relationship between her mature Earth botanical-biochemistry practice and a V’ren practitioner who can learn from her work while bringing their own botanical and biochemical tradition into the relationship.
The identity of Martha’s eventual V’ren apprentice has not yet been established.
The exact specialty of that apprentice and the formal structure of their apprenticeship also remain open canon.

Martha’s relationship with Matt predates almost everything currently making him famous.
She knew him as a botany student approximately twenty-five years ago.
More importantly, she remembers him being ridiculous.

Martha is commercially successful but does not operate West River Botanicals as a mass-volume discount business.
Her market position depends on expertise, quality, selectivity, and reputation.
The retail shop provides the broad public business.
The private consulting practice monetizes scarcity.
A 3,000-fiat consultation establishes immediately that special work is not an ordinary shop service. Clients are paying for access to Martha’s judgment and formulation skill, not merely expensive ingredients.

She is an old Matt witness, someone who can reveal pieces of his pre-Freeholder adult life without exposition coming from family.
She is an Earth scientist of real standing, useful when V’ren specialists need terrestrial expertise that is neither government-controlled nor corporate laboratory science.
She is also a merchant, comfortable turning technical expertise into products and services.
And through her coming V’ren apprenticeship, she becomes one of the places where first contact stops being diplomatic spectacle and becomes actual professional transmission between cultures.
That is probably her most useful long-term role.
