Following a Captain’s Mast convened under the authority of the commanding officer of the Kalnareth, disciplinary action has been imposed upon T’rell K’eth, an officer presently assigned to this vessel.

The matter arose from a continuing pattern of public conduct and demonstrated judgment determined to be unsuitable for an officer of the Kalnareth.

This finding concerns T’rell K’eth’s obligations as an assigned officer and the standards of conduct expected of personnel serving aboard an active vessel. It is not a general prohibition upon political disagreement, cultural criticism, or the expression of unpopular opinions.

The Kalnareth remains an operating vessel and base supporting approximately 10,000 personnel, an active hospital, communications systems, hydroponics, environmental and power systems, maintenance operations, and more than 1,000 small craft presently using the vessel as a home base. Officers assigned to this command remain subject to its discipline regardless of whether they are temporarily residing, working, eating, or spending personal time elsewhere within the Freehold.

After consideration at Captain’s Mast, Captain K’rem T’all imposed the following punishment:

180 days shipboard restriction.

During the period of restriction, T’rell K’eth will remain aboard the Kalnareth except when specifically authorized to leave in the performance of assigned duties.

He will receive basic shipboard rations for the duration of the restriction.

He is reassigned for the period of punishment to waste-reclamation processing, including the maintenance, monitoring, and operation of systems responsible for processing the waste stream generated by the approximately 10,000 persons presently supported aboard the vessel.

The assignment is necessary shipboard work and will be performed to the same operational and safety standards required of all personnel assigned to those systems.

Captain K’rem T’all provided the following statement for release:

“An officer is permitted opinions. An officer is also expected to possess judgment, discipline, and an understanding that his conduct reflects upon the command to which he remains assigned. T’rell K’eth has been given six months to reconsider that distinction while performing useful work.”

The Captain further emphasized that waste-reclamation personnel perform essential duties aboard the Kalnareth and that assignment to those systems is not intended to demean the personnel who normally serve there.

“There is no dishonor in maintaining the systems that allow ten thousand people to live aboard this ship. The dishonor lies in requiring others to perform necessary work while imagining oneself above it.”

This action is solely a disciplinary matter of the Kalnareth.

It does not constitute disciplinary action by the Marmaduke Freehold.

It does not constitute action by the V’ren Trust of Earth.

Nothing in this disposition prevents either government from independently reviewing conduct occurring within its jurisdiction or involving persons subject to its authority.

Likewise, neither the Freeholder nor the V’ren Trust participated in the Captain’s Mast or directed its outcome.

The command is publishing this notice because the conduct underlying the proceeding occurred substantially in public and has itself become a matter of public discussion.

Personnel assigned to the Kalnareth remain accountable to the vessel’s chain of command.

That accountability does not cease when they log into social media.

PUBLIC NOTICE OF PETITION RECEIVED

The Office of the Freeholder confirms receipt of a petition from D’fret W’ilm, registered mate of T’rell K’eth, requesting dissolution of their registered mating relationship and an award of full custody of their children.

The petition was submitted following the public conduct of T’rell K’eth and the disciplinary proceedings subsequently conducted aboard the V’ren vessel Kalnareth.

D’fret W’ilm states that her petition is not based solely upon the punishment imposed by Captain K’rem T’all.

She asserts that T’rell K’eth’s own public statements, conduct, and expressed opinions have caused her to conclude that his moral judgment is incompatible with her own and that his judgment as a mate and father can no longer be relied upon.

Her petition asks the Office of the Freeholder to find in her favor in the pending divorce proceedings and to grant her full custody of the couple’s children.

In the filing, D’fret W’ilm states:

“I have disagreed with my mate before. Marriage does not require identical thought. What I have read from him these past days is not disagreement. It is a pattern of judgment toward other people that I do not wish taught to our children.”

She further states:

“I believed T’rell to be a man whose severity was balanced by responsibility. I no longer believe the balance exists.”

D’fret W’ilm specifically cites T’rell K’eth’s repeated public commentary concerning inherited status, V’ren cultural purity, the conduct of grieving persons, and the social standing of V’ren adapting to life inside the Freehold.

She argues that these statements are particularly relevant because their children are now growing up among human and V’ren families whose inherited social positions vary widely and, within the Freehold, carry no governing authority.

Her petition continues:

“My children will attend school with children he has described as lesser in everything but the word. They will eat with them, work with them, play with them, and perhaps someday love them. I will not raise children who are taught to measure the worth of the person beside them by a judgment made about that person’s ancestors.”

The Office of the Freeholder emphasizes that receipt of the petition is not a judgment on its merits.

No custody determination has yet been issued.

T’rell K’eth will be afforded the opportunity to respond to the petition and to present evidence concerning his fitness as a parent, his relationship with his children, and the claims made by D’fret W’ilm.

The Office further notes that the disciplinary action imposed aboard the Kalnareth and the present domestic proceeding are legally separate matters.

Captain K’rem T’all acted under his authority as commanding officer of the Kalnareth.

D’fret W’ilm has independently invoked the jurisdiction of the Freeholder in a family dispute involving persons presently resident within the Freehold.

Neither proceeding determines the outcome of the other.

The Office nevertheless recognizes that much of the conduct cited in both matters occurred publicly.

For that reason, and at the request of D’fret W’ilm, the existence and general basis of the petition are being disclosed.

Statement From D’fret W’ilm

D’fret W’ilm authorized the following additional statement:

“I did not petition because my mate embarrassed me.”

“I did not petition because Captain K’rem punished him.”

“I petition because I read what my mate chose to say when he believed himself free to say it.”

“That matters more to me than what he says now that consequences have arrived.”

She states that she has no objection to her children maintaining a relationship with their father if the Office determines such contact to be appropriate.

Her request for full custody concerns decision-making authority.

“He may remain their father. I am asking that he no longer be permitted to decide what is best for them.”

Jurisdiction

T’rell K’eth remains subject to his 180-day shipboard restriction imposed aboard the Kalnareth.

That restriction does not prevent him from participating in the Freehold proceeding through whatever means the Office makes available.

The Kalnareth command is not a party to the divorce or custody petition.

The V’ren Trust of Earth has not been asked to adjudicate this petition.

Any separate action by the Trust concerning T’rell K’eth’s citizenship, status, or conduct would constitute an independent matter.

Statement From the Office of the Freeholder

The Office will not treat political disagreement, cultural traditionalism, or criticism of the Freeholder as evidence by themselves that a parent is unfit.

The petition before the Office makes a narrower claim.

It alleges that T’rell K’eth’s publicly demonstrated judgment, together with his conduct toward persons he considers socially inferior, raises questions about whether he can exercise parental authority in the best interests of children being raised within the Freehold.

That claim will be examined on evidence.

The Office will issue its determination when the matter has been heard.

Until then, the disciplinary judgment of Captain K’rem T’all remains exactly what it was:

A shipboard disciplinary judgment.

The petition of D’fret W’ilm remains exactly what it is:

A mate asking the Freeholder to decide whether the man she chose to build a family with should still possess authority over that family.

Those are separate questions.

T’rell K’eth is now required to answer both.

Statement from W’ren Th’ron, Keeper of the Flame

“This matter is unprecedented in V’ren culture, and I am not prepared to offer public judgment while D’fret W’ilm’s petition remains before the Freeholder.

“It is my understanding that petitions of this kind normally require approximately ninety days before the Freeholder issues a ruling. I will therefore withhold further public comment until the matter has been adjudicated.

“As Keeper of the Flame, however, I have responsibilities that extend beyond public commentary. I will be consulting with the V’ren Trust and with Matthew Marmaduke on the professional and cultural questions this petition raises, and with Matthew personally as a friend and, now, as family.

“Until the petition is resolved, D’fret W’ilm and T’rell K’eth are entitled to have the matter judged on its merits rather than through my speculation.”
