AMAZON EARTH DIVISION

Office of Alien Affairs

Public Statement, May 6, 2440
Matthew Johnathan Boone Marmaduke, Director of Alien Affairs

The immediate emergency surrounding the V’ren landing in central Missouri has moved from rescue into settlement and support.

V’ren families are continuing to leave temporary accommodations aboard the damaged vessel and are being placed in existing housing and temporary facilities in central Missouri. Medical screening, family reunification, food distribution and initial work placement are continuing.

Amazon has authorized a 10,000 Fiat Dollar settlement balance for every V’ren arriving on Earth. These funds may be used through Amazon for clothing, household goods, tools, personal items and other normal purchases as individuals and families establish themselves.

The balance is a grant. It is not a loan, does not create an employment obligation and does not establish Amazon citizenship or residency.

Housing assignments, local employment and civil status inside the Marmaduke Freehold are Freehold matters. I am not administering those programs in my capacity as Amazon Director of Alien Affairs.

Amazon’s job here is considerably simpler: where our logistics, purchasing and communications systems can solve a problem, we will use them.

That is today’s update.

Matthew J. B. Marmaduke

The housing distinction is important because North Park is already functioning as real neighborhood absorption by May 6, with V’ren residents entering apartments and job offers starting to move.

Amazon Gives Refugees Something Better Than a Relief Line: Money

Amazon’s first major civilian move after the V’ren landing is remarkably straightforward. Every V’ren arriving on Earth will receive 10,000 Fiat Dollars to purchase what they actually need.

That distinction matters.

Instead of issuing standardized clothing, household kits and whatever some administrator thinks an alien family ought to want, Amazon is giving more than a million displaced people individual purchasing power and access to the largest commercial distribution network on Earth.

Director of Alien Affairs Matthew Johnathan Boone Marmaduke also made an important jurisdictional distinction. Amazon is paying for the settlement grant. Housing, employment and residency inside his Freehold remain Freehold matters.

For an event that has produced no shortage of overlapping authorities, that may be as important as the money.

The V’ren lost homes, possessions and, in many cases, nearly everything they understood as normal life.

Ten thousand dollars will not replace that.

It will, however, let them choose their own underwear.

That is a decent place to start.

Amazon Welcomes the Aliens With Store Credit

Amazon has discovered the oldest trick in corporate governance: call dependency generosity.

Each V’ren refugee is being given 10,000 Fiat Dollars to spend through Amazon as part of the company’s first-contact settlement program.

Director Matthew Marmaduke emphasizes that the money is a grant, not a loan, and creates no obligation to work for Amazon.

That misses the point.

Amazon has placed itself between more than a million newly arrived consumers and nearly everything they need to begin life on Earth. The company supplying the money also owns the marketplace through which much of that money will immediately circulate.

This is not necessarily exploitation.

It is, however, one of the largest customer-acquisition programs in human history.

Amazon should explain why assistance could not have been distributed through neutral wallets rather than attached directly to its own commercial ecosystem.

There appears to be some confusion about what Amazon has offered.

Amazon has provided each V’ren resident with 10,000 Fiat Dollars in Amazon account credit. Amazon receives the same customer information it receives from any other customer using an Amazon account.

The offer is not exclusive.

Nothing prevents Google from extending equivalent credit through Walmart, Apple from doing so through Target, or any of the major Asian retail groups from making similar offers through their own retail networks.

I encourage them to do so.

Actually, I would be fascinated to see what happens if somebody gives a million V’ren ten thousand dollars each to spend on Temu.

Amazon made an offer because Amazon was in a position to make one immediately. Other retailers are welcome to compete for their business.

Competition remains legal.

Curated social Media:

  1. The $10,000 Amazon credit
  • @EuropaWatch: So Amazon gives a million refugees $10,000 each, but only if they spend it with Amazon. Totally not a customer-acquisition scheme.
    • @MattMarmaduke: Of course it is customer acquisition. Amazon is a retailer. Google is welcome to give them $10,000 at Walmart. Apple can give them $10,000 at Target. Anybody else can make an offer too. I strongly encourage this competition.
  1. The obvious Temu question
  • @CheapStuffDaily: Waiting for somebody to give the V’ren ten grand in Temu credit just to see what happens.
    • @MattMarmaduke: Same. Purely as a matter of xenological research, obviously.
  1. Customer data

@PrivacyNowEuropa; Amazon is getting an unprecedented dataset on alien consumer behavior and everyone is pretending that’s normal.
@AmazonAlienAffairs: Amazon receives the same account and purchasing data from V’ren customers that it receives from human customers. There is no separate research program attached to the grant. Participation is voluntary. Other retailers are free to offer competing accounts and incentives.

  1. V’ren answer the privacy concern
  • @OpenNetEarth: Do the V’ren even understand what Amazon is collecting from them?
    • @VrenTrust: Yes. The terms were translated before acceptance. We understand what customer accounts are. We also understand that human retailers would very much like us to buy things from them. We also understand People are also assholes to customer services agents. Many of us held that job in our youth. This concept is not uniquely human.
  1. “Who authorized Matt?”
  • @NEAConstitutional: Who exactly appointed Matthew Marmaduke spokesman for an alien civilization?
    • @KremTall: We did. I asked him on our first day on Earth whether he would serve as our commercial liaison. He agreed. You may stop searching for the human institution that authorized our decision.
  1. Why Matt?
  • @WorldPoliticsToday: Serious question for @KremTall. Why Marmaduke? Out of every government and corporation on Earth, why him?
    • @KremTall: Because while much of your world was asking what our arrival could do for them, Matthew Marmaduke asked what he could do for us. We noticed.
  1. Amazon’s commercial payoff
  • @MarketLedger: So Amazon handed out roughly ten billion Fiat Dollars and we’re supposed to believe there was nothing in it for them?
    • @VrenTrust: There was something in it for them. Amazon received one year of distribution rights within Amazon-controlled territory for more than one hundred products. The V’ren Trust and the individual creators retain their intellectual-property rights. This is called a commercial agreement.
  1. Matt’s three hats
  • @EuropaCivic: Freeholder. Amazon Director of Alien Affairs. V’ren commercial liaison. Apparently “conflict of interest” has also been lost in first contact.
    • @MattMarmaduke: Amazon knows I am Freeholder. The V’ren know I work for Amazon. Amazon knows the V’ren hired me. Everybody directly involved seems to understand the arrangement. Mostly what we have eliminated is the need to schedule three meetings.
  1. A V’ren view of “conflict”
  • @GovernanceReview: Does @VrenTrust really see no problem with the same man representing different parties in the same negotiations?
    • @VrenTrust: When interests differ, he identifies whose interests he is representing. When interests align, he does not require three people to repeat the same information to one another. We consider this efficient.
  1. The CEO rumor May 8, 2440
  • @AmazonInsider: Half the executive floor thinks Marmaduke is building enough internal power to make a run at Kallos.
    • @MattMarmaduke For Adrian’s job? Ain’t no fucking way. I already have too many jobs.
      • @KremTall: We support Director Marmaduke’s decision not to seek additional employment.
        • @VrenTrust: Unanimously.
          • @KremTall: He does not need more work. I need my darts partner unbusy next week.
